Industry Speaks - Q&A with Terry Brown, Vice President of Implemenation Services at Insuresoft

INN:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a best-of-breed versus an end-to-end solution? When does it make sense for a carrier to choose one over the other?

TB:
Best-of-breed solutions, in theory, should satisfy the business units desires and needs to improve each respective business unit. In reality, carriers should not lose sight of some of the integration complexities. This can be best represented through overall lack of data transparency, utilization of different technology stacks, and lack of consistent user interfaces. To help mitigate these risks, carriers should look to partner with a vendor that can implement one module at a time yet still provide the majority of the end-to-end core applications. More specifically, the carrier can then focus on improving internal operational efficiencies and leverage system benefits compared to managing the product integrations.

INN:
How should carriers go about getting the support they need from policy administration technology providers for successful deployment of new or enhanced systems?

TB:
Carriers have the unique ability to leverage the expertise provided by technology vendors as they are going through a deployment of a new solution. More specifically, a carrier can leverage the rich industry and technology expertise provided to them through a vendor by taking advantage of their client list. I would also suggest that you spend time with existing vendor customers to understand what support record the vendor historically and currently provides to its customer base. Lastly, it is imperative to have a detailed project plan in place that clearly defines goals and identifies the needed resources from both parties.

Best-of-Breed Policy Administration Systems: Lessons from the Habitrail®

As Seen In the July/August 2011 issue of Insurance Networking News.
By: Terry Brown, Vice President of Implemenation Services at Insuresoft

It’s an age old struggle in this business—deciding between implementing a full enterprise solution vs. implementing ‘best of breed’ solutions from various vendors within the insurance vertical. You can make an argument in favor or against either approach. Enterprise solutions are typically easier to implement and allow carriers to clearly define work effort and costs by working with just one vendor. However, enterprise solutions can also be a bit limiting. Maybe not all of the components of the system are as feature-rich or as robust as others or maybe the various business units within the carrier cannot agree on which solution best fits their needs. Best of breed solutions, on the other hand, allow carriers to choose from among 60+ vendors in the space for the best systems for them by component. It seems like this approach would make all the business units happy. However, best of breed solutions are inherently more complex and risky. In addition to evaluating the functionality offered by each solution, carriers must determine how each system will integrate with the others. Issues of data transparency, maintaining a consistent user experience, and dealing with various technology stacks complicate both the evaluation and the implementation processes. Ideally, what carriers want and need is the best of both worlds—the ability to implement solutions by component, as their business needs and budgets dictate, and to eventually wind up with an enterprise-wide solution that provides best of breed functionality for all core components.

This sort of ‘plug and go’ mentality reminds me of the Habitrail system I built and maintained for my favorite pet hamster, as a little girl. I was one of those kids that always wanted the newest, coolest stuff and Habitrail was my parents’ way of giving me at least some of what I wanted without breaking the bank. Remember the Habitrail? It could be as basic or as cool as you wanted to make it. What started out as a standard plastic box, big enough for one hamster, could quickly evolve into sections that included a bigger space for multiple hamsters as well as the now famous hamster wheel treadmill, a jungle gym and even climbing walls and a swimming pool! If my parents had limited me to a standard cage, not capable of expansion, I would soon have been asking for a replacement cage for my birthday and would have tossed the current cage out with the trash. Not a good investment! Similarly, if they purchased various add-ons from other manufacturers and relied on me to duct tape them together, that would have spelled serious trouble for both me and for my poor pet hamster, who would undoubtedly have found his way out of the cage and into harm’s way. With the Habitrail, my parents provided me with a starter cage for my first hamster and the ability to add on when needed or desired and at a more reasonable cost. Each new module was provided by the same manufacturer and easily plugged into place, expanding my hamster’s living space and feeding my need to keep up with the latest cool stuff I saw on TV.

The Habitrail concept might just be the solution for that age old struggle carriers face. “Best-of-breed” policy administration systems from a single vendor can provide carriers with the best of both worlds. The solution: A single vendor who offers a suite of modules for carriers seeking to control the pace of their implementations and deployment of core system functionalities. This approach helps keep carriers costs controlled while moving their organization toward having that full suite of PAS modules as their needs call for it based on growth, timing and budgets.

its flagship policy administration system—The Diamond System—into a “best-of-breed” single vendor-modular offering for P&C carriers. The Diamond System, which is built on the Microsoft .NET platform and has a services-oriented architecture that enables web-based access for agents, consumers and other insurance carrier partners, is a fully automated and integrated policy administration system for both personal and commercial lines insurance carriers. The Diamond System can now be implemented as either an enterprise solution or “best-of-breed” single vendor-modular offering for policy management, billing and claims processing.

The end result has been to provide carriers with more robust, user friendly pre-integrated technology in a modular format that allows them to easily add modules at their own pace, whenever they are ready for them. With the single vendor “best-of-breed” approach, carriers can now focus on improving internal operational efficiencies and system benefits compared to managing the product integrations.

It’s no coincidence that the Habitrail system is still available today. It’s still around because the concept is a good one. Find a vendor who knows their stuff and pick a starting point—one module or several. Expand over time to build the ultimate system.

AQS and Insuresoft form Mobius Alliance to offer Integrated Core Solutions for P&C Insurers

May 23, 2011: University Park, IL – AQS and Insuresoft are pleased to announce the companies have formed a strategic alliance which combines the strengths of both organizations to offer a full suite of integrated solutions for personal and commercial lines carriers.

Both AQS and Insuresoft have long histories of providing value to the P&C industry. Each company will continue to operate independently as well as through this new alliance. The alliance, combined with AQS’ long time partnership with the ISO Rating Service, brings together three high value offerings into a single end-to-end solution and will be known collectively as the AQS Mobius Alliance. The new suite, which is available immediately, includes applications for policy management, billing, claims, document management, agency and consumer web portals, product configuration and analytics.

“Even though the industry is only learning of this alliance today, we have been collaboratively working on this relationship for some time,” said Tony Villa, Insuresoft CEO. “Integrating our solutions and services enables us to deliver a seamless offering to existing and potential clients. Our combined offerings to the market create a comprehensive, integrated, and powerful solution suite.”

A significant differentiator for the alliance is the degree of integration the companies have achieved. The unique alignment of the AQS-Insuresoft partnership penetrates all aspects of the organizations’ products, technology, strategies, services, and contracting. The other key differentiator of the new joint offering is that it becomes the only enterprise solution that provides seamless consumption of ISO content.

“The ability to implement and stay current with ISO products, rates, rules, and forms is a significant challenge for commercial lines insurance companies,” said Karen Furtado, partner for SMA. “A complete end-to-end solution that utilizes the robust ISO offering brings a new level of capability to the industry.”

Existing clients will now have access to additional solutions that are integrated with currently installed products, while new clients will have the option of installing an integrated, end-to-end solution suite or a single component with the ability to easily expand through additional components in the future.

“We evaluated a number of potential partners over the last few years,” said Dave Kerford, AQS CEO. “Insuresoft has complementary solutions, a strong financial record, a highly-satisfied client base, and a long track record of success. Additionally, over the last year, I’ve been impressed by how well the two company cultures have grown and matured together.”

Industry Speaks - Policy Administration Q&A with Tom Westhoff, National Sales Manager at Insuresoft

As seen in the July/August 2010 issue of Insurance Networking News.

INN:
How is the continuing turbulent economy affecting insurer decisions to keep their PAS, replace parts of it, or implement an entirely new system?

TW:
Insurance companies are being more thorough in their evaluation of software vendors in the current economic climate. Insurance companies are still in the market for upgrading their existing legacy technology systems but are aware that the financial impact of a software implementation can be high if they don’t select the right solution and understand what the implementation process will entail. Insurance carriers have high costs related to maintaining their legacy systems and those same systems can limit their growth. With that in mind, carriers are actively looking to improve their technology by evaluating systems while paying closer attention to the financial impact they may have on their organization.

INN:
What types of new features are available in the policy admin systems today that have a positive downstream affect on the distribution network and can provide substantial ROI?

TW:
Modern policy administration systems offer new and flexible tools to support product development and distribution. Open architectures that support web based distribution for insurance products allow carriers to deliver products via agent portals or direct to consumers, drastically improving speed to market and premium growth. Being able to integrate with comparative raters and lead generation sources allows agents to access new customers and process business in real time. Solutions having the ability to integrate with data providers allows agents to evaluate risks more accurately which improves underwriting accuracy and efficiency. This ultimately leads toward having a positive impact on the insurance carriers ROI.

Insuresoft's Diamond System Provides Property and Casualty Carriers with a Single Platform for Personal and Commercial Lines of Business

As seen in the July/August 2010 issue of Insurance Networking News.

Insuresoft's Diamond System Provides Property and Casualty Carriers with a Single Platform for Personal and Commercial Lines of Business
Insuresoft, a leading provider of insurance software, announced in June the expansion of their award winning policy administration system, The Diamond System, for property and casualty commercial lines of business. Louie Bode, Director at Insuresoft, has provided his insight and rationale on this recent expansion.

I recently spoke at the 10th annual Insuresoft User Group Meeting in Grapevine, Texas. Surrounded by our customers, I talked about the trends in the commercial lines world, the challenges the economy has placed on carriers and Insuresoft’s approach toward developing a commercial lines policy administration system. Some of the highlights of my discussion focused on our development approach for releasing The Diamond System for commercial lines:

1.) We wanted to keep it simple.
We heard time and time again that carriers desired to simplify their policy, billing and claims systems to the point where they reside on one single platform. The sheer updating and maintenance on multiple systems takes immense amounts of resources and ultimately opens up the possibility of errors when data entered does not sync with each of the systems.

2.) We focused on creating programs that would enhance our customer’s current markets.
With commercial lines accounting for a large share of all premiums written in the United States, Insuresoft targeted this lucrative market for our customers who currently write or who are considering writing commercial lines of business. With proven technology as the primary driver, expansion decisions by our customers become easier to do.

3.) We wanted to create an easy to use environment.
Insuresoft has been working on creating a fluid environment of commercial processing from the back end to the point of sale agency web portal. The following are some of the commercial lines Insuresoft has been developing:

BOP
Crime
Commercial Auto
Umbrella
Inland Marine
Workers Compensation
Garage
General Liability
Commercial Property
Commercial Package

4.) We wanted to build on Insuresoft’s proven technology track record for the property and casualty Insurance industry.
For 14 years, Insuresoft has been focused primarily on implementing personal lines policy administration for its customers. During that time, Insuresoft delivered an astonishing 93% customer satisfaction rating. Insuresoft’s Diamond System has also been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including a recent Technology Decision RAVE award based on achieving the highest Average Customer Experience Rankings (ACE) from NOVARICA in the policy administration category.

5.) We wanted to include a little of our culture in the product.
Our products are only as good as the people behind them. At Insuresoft, our customers know us on a first name basis. Our technology enables us to compete with much larger companies while our approach to our customers gives us the personal touch missing from many companies today. With these goals accomplished, Insuresoft proudly released The Diamond System for commercial lines. The Diamond System now provides carriers with a single platform for policy processing, claims, billing and reporting thereby eliminating the need to process policies on multiple systems. The Diamond System from Insuresoft now makes personal and commercial lines policy administration easy.

Insuersoft's 10th Annual User Group Meeting

June 18, 2010

Insuresoft’s 10th Annual User Group Meeting (6th since their spin-off from Applied Systems) was held on June 8-10, 2010 at Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, TX.

The meeting opened with a brief welcome and overview of the night’s activities by Insuresoft President & CEO Tony Villa. Held 36 stories above the field in the Dr. Pepper Skybar, the meeting featured a tour of the new Cowboy Stadium, a meet and greet with former Dallas Cowboy great Ed “Too Tall” Jones and a performance by the world famous Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

The venue then shifted back to the Gaylord Texan for a day and a half of updates, presentations and panel discussions that included a mixture of Insuresoft subject matter experts and customers. Topics for this year’s meeting included Diamond updates, rules engine information, product migration strategies, discussions on the non-standard auto market and Insuresoft’s commercial lines launch which was recently announced during IASA a couple of days earlier. At the end of the final day, individual team meetings between customers and their respective Insuresoft account team took place.

“With all of the things happening in our office, it is difficult to justify going to any outside event,” stated Neel Choate, Agricultural Workers Mutual Auto Insurance Company , “but Insuresoft does it right by keeping the agenda to a day and a half which makes the Insuresoft User Group Meeting time well spent.”

Insuresoft Wins 2010 Rave Award from Tech Decisions and Novarica

Insuresoft, a leading policy administration provider for the property and casualty insurance market, received a 2010 RAVE Award in the Property & Casualty Policy Administration System category this week during the ACORD LOMA Insurance Systems Forum in Las Vegas, Nevada. The award was presented by insurance technology trade publisher Tech Decisions in conjunction with leading insurance analyst firm Novarica. The RAVE awards recognize solution providers whose technology delivers exemplary value to their customers, as measured by senior IT executives at P&C insurance companies surveyed by Novarica.

The RAVE awards, which are based on Novarica’s Average Customer Experience (ACE) Ranking methodology, are awarded to solution providers like Insuresoft who have attained the highest aggregate rankings during the past twelve months. The ACE ranking by Novarica measures customer satisfaction levels objectively across a wide range of areas, and the results are intended to guide insurers as they consider potential solution providers.

“This award is very important to Insuresoft and provides an objective report card to those P&C carriers evaluating policy administration vendors,” said Tom Westhoff, National Sales Manager at Insuresoft.

Insuresoft received 94% overall satisfaction for the win in the P&C Policy Administration System category with The Diamond System, a fully automated and integrated policy administration system for both personal and commercial lines insurance carriers. The New Rules for Implementing a Policy Admin System

As seen in the July/August issue of Insurance Networking News by Mike Hernandez, Marketing Director of Insuresoft.

Insuresoft, a leading provider of insurance software, understands that insurance carriers of all sizes are facing IT decisions with a strange, unfamiliar set of rules attached-a budget. With this in mind, Insuresoft has positioned its product and service offerings to reflect this paradigm shift. While highly customizable systems can still be developed for any size carrier, the decision between going with an out-of-the-box system vs. creating an expensive, customized, lengthy in-house system has been trending toward implementing a pre-configured system especially during these budget conscious econmic times we are facing. Insuresoft has had implementations of its flagship policy admin system, The Diamond System, take as little as 90 days, resulting in the delivery of a fully functional policy administration system that includes underwriting, billing, rating, and claims.

GHS Property and Casualty Insurance Company based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma recently faced a similar situation and successfully implemented Insuresoft's Diamond System.

The Diamond System is a fully automated and integrated policy processing system for both personal and commercial insurance carriers. It is a scalable, reliable, and cost-effective solution for carrying out all business-critical insurance processing functions. Its out-of-the-box approach to policy administration makes it an attractive and cost appealing option for carriers of all sizes.

"At the end of the day, the out-of-the-box offering that The Diamond System provided made the most sense for us," said GHS Accounting Manager Brandye McCart, "Diamond turned out to be one of the most complete policy admin systems available on the market."

In addition to GHS realizing the economic benefits that Diamond provided during implementation, GHS also rolled out the The Diamond System in a hosted environment through Insuresoft's collocation services agreement with AT&T. A cost effective and flexible option for customers, Insuresoft's hosted solution (ASP) assigns the optimal bandwidth that is needed to support network traffic and provides the optimal environment for the use of Insuresoft's Web tools.

"Diamond addressed all of our key requirements by demonstrating configurable product design and intuitive policyholder self-service options. Additionally we were impressed by Insuresoft's commitment to delivering the solution using the software as a service (SaaS) in a safe, hosted model," said McCart.

So far, GHS has implemented The Diamond System for one line of business in one state. The goal is to have 4 lines of business up and running by the end of 2009.

"We feel that The Diamond System's inherent functionality is well aligned with the business and technology needs expressed by GHS," stated Chris Blair, Vice President Product Management for Insuresoft. "We are delighted to refer to GHS as our newest Diamond partner running on our ASP."

Out-of-the-box does not mean out-of-the-way. Insuresoft business analysts and developers work hand in hand with customers to make sure implementations go smoothly every step of the way.

"The teams worked together to configure the system according to the requirements provided by GHS," stated Terry Brown, Vice President of Implementation Services for Insuresoft, "There was a lot of interaction that needed to take place between Insuresoft and GHS to make this happen. GHS committed to this initiative and as a result, the implementation went extremely well," continued Brown. And that makes everyone happy!

About GHS: GHS Property & Casualty Insurance Company is a subsidiary of Health Care Service Corporation, a Mutual Legal Reserve Company. Based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, GHS derived its name from their parent company's corporate name, Group Health Care Service Corporation, A Mutual Legal Reserve Company.
